Sodium is the main electrolyte responsible for fluid balance, nerve transmission and muscle function. During intense exercise, athletes can lose hundreds to thousands of milligrams of sodium per hour through sweat. This may lead to reduced performance, muscle cramps or even an increased risk of hyponatremia. Correct sodium intake is therefore not only a matter of comfort, but also of safety and long-term performance.

ColaFactor™ 🧊

ColaFactor™ indicates how many percent of carbohydrates an electrolyte drink contains compared with a regular cola drink (10.6 g of sugar per 100 ml). A value of 100% means that the electrolyte drink contains the same amount of carbohydrates as cola, while lower values indicate that the drink contains fewer carbohydrates.

A proper hydration drink should have a ColaFactor™ below 40% so the body can absorb fluids effectively and maintain hydration status.

Drinks with a higher ColaFactor™ above 40% may slow down fluid absorption due to higher osmolarity. This means the body first needs to dilute the ingested fluid before it can use it effectively. This may lead to inefficient hydration and gastrointestinal issues, especially during physical activity.

 

With ColaFactor™ Insights, it is clear that a significant number of available electrolyte drinks have a ColaFactor higher than 40%. This means they contain 40% or more sugar compared with regular cola drinks. This important finding highlights the unexpectedly high carbohydrate content in some commonly consumed sports drinks, which should primarily serve hydration and electrolyte replacement rather than excessive sugar intake.

The Future of Sports Hydration

The analysis of hydration and nutrition in sport reveals a major mismatch between commercially available sports drinks and real physiological needs. While some athletes may perform well with standard hydration options, many of them – especially those with high sodium losses – are likely not replacing enough sodium, which can negatively affect performance and recovery.

The main insight is that a one-size-fits-all approach to hydration is outdated. As athletes become more aware of the importance of personalized sodium intake, demand will grow for targeted hydration strategies and drinks with higher sodium content.
